In S.O.S.der's online (Zoom) seminar series, Deniz Baran was the guest on the evening of Thursday, 11 June 2026. In the seminar titled Applications to Intervene in the Genocide Case at the International Court of Justice, the legal bases, procedure and consequences of third states' applications to intervene in the genocide cases before the International Court of Justice (ICJ) were addressed.
About the Speaker
Deniz Baran is a research assistant in the Department of International Law at Istanbul University Faculty of Law and a doctoral candidate in international law at the same university. A lawyer registered with the Istanbul Bar, Baran works as an international-law expert at the Al Sharq Forum; his writings on international-law issues are published in outlets such as Al Jazeera, Middle East Eye and Anadolu Agency.
Topics Addressed in the Seminar
The programme assessed, in the light of concrete examples, the ICJ proceedings concerning the interpretation of the Genocide Convention, the legal framework of states' intervention in a case (Articles 62–63 of the ICJ Statute), and the importance these applications carry in the struggle against genocide.
