In S.O.S.der's online seminar series, Prof. Dr. Berdal Aral assessed international crimes — above all genocide and crimes against humanity — within the framework of international law.

In this programme of its online (Zoom) seminar series, the Association for Combating Crimes Against Humanity and Genocide (S.O.S.der) hosted Prof. Dr. Berdal Aral. In the seminar held on the evening of Friday, 30 January 2026, the place of international crimes — genocide, crimes against humanity, war crimes and the crime of aggression — within international law, and the legal instruments for combating them, were discussed.

About the Speaker

Prof. Dr. Berdal Aral completed his doctorate at the University of Glasgow in 1994; he is an academic working on international law, human rights and the Islamic world. He is currently a faculty member of the Department of International Relations at Istanbul Medeniyet University. He has many books, foremost among them The Right of Self-Defence in International Law, Collective Rights as Third-Generation Human Rights, and The Endless Betrayal, in which he addresses the Palestinian question in the shadow of imperialism and international law.

Topics Addressed in the Seminar

The programme assessed, within an academic framework, the definition and sources of the concept of international crime, the role of international judicial mechanisms (the International Criminal Court and the International Court of Justice) in investigating and prosecuting these crimes, and the obstacles to holding those responsible to account.

As S.O.S.der, we thank Prof. Dr. Berdal Aral for this seminar, which shed light on our work to document genocide and crimes against humanity and to bring the perpetrators before justice.
